There are many things that we can give, the most important of which is our caring attention.
When we make an effort to give our full attention and caring to another human being, it can make an amazing difference in someone’s day, and in our own.
Try it. Next time you are in the checkout line, smile and say hello to the cashier. Ask him/her how their day is going and be sincerely interested in their response. You will be amazed by the reaction that you get. The light in their eyes when they sense your sincere caring will brighten your heart.
Yoga philosophy teaches us that every action (karma) brings a reciprocal action. It is the law of cause and effect. We reap what we sow. Good intention and deeds contribute to good karma and therefore future happiness while harmful actions and deeds contribute to bad karma and therefore future suffering. The law of Karma, teaches us that when we give something good of ourselves, we are eventually rewarded tenfold.
So in this season of giving, remember to not just give what your wallet can buy, but give of yourself in the most simple of ways. It can make a world of difference and is the most precious gift you can give.
Happy holidays!
